What We Do

"We are on a journey with the people of Kenya.  They select the destination."- Emely Silver, Executive Director

By listening to their needs of our contacts and partners in Kenya, we are able to best allocate our resources and efforts.

The following summarizes our major activities:

Shipment of Supplies:
This is one activity our Kenyan partners have expressed the most need for.
We collect school supplies, books, computer equipment, medical supplies, assistive devices, among other things and make regular shipments to our counterparts in Kenya who then distribute them to our partner schools, clinics and orphanages in rural and urban slum areas of Kenya. Click here for a detailed list of In kind donations.

Special Projects:
We raise funds and work on major projects with partners in Kenya.

Thika Regional Library- This August 22, 2009 AFK was in Kenya for the dedication of the library that is now up and ready to serve the community of Thika District.  Of course, there will be on-going support in terms of providing more books on a regular basis to the library.  The entire area is deeply appreciative of the efforts of Megan Adams and Danielle Rodriguez who raised so much of the funds for the building of the library.

Solar Water Purifier Project-  In response to Kenya's drought and water crisis, AFK is undertaking the building of small solar water purifiers to go to schools and clinics in the most afflicted areas of Kenya.  The project is headed by Rob Richards and other AFK supporters.  We are able to set up a water purifier for about $400.  It will provide three gallons of clean and pure water each day.  The first model is working exceedingly well and we have hopes to set up many more with the assistance of AFK supporters.  If you can assist with this project please click here on how to make a donation.

Women's Basket Project (SWEP)- A small business project run through our partners in Kibera. The Project provides training and support to women living with AIDS in the Kibera slums of Nairobi. Read more about the details of this project...

Kibera School for Girls- AFK assists the newly established Kibera School for Girls (built in August 2009) in the largest slum in Sub-Saharan Africa.  The full information on the school is provided on their website.  AFK provides monthly support, school uniforms, school supplies and is now installing a solar water purifier.  Our next big goal is to set up a health office in the school.  If you wish to make a donation to make the clinic a reality, please make an online donation indicating it to go to the Kibera School for Girls.

ST. Lucy School for the Visually Impaired:  Located in Meru District of Eastern Province it also houses a population of children with Albanism.  We provide
Books and School Supplies and this year we took wonderful baseball caps donated by the Chicago Cubs for the children with Albinism as well as sun screen and hundreds of pair of sun glasses.  Wour medical team provides physicals for the children and area residents.

Rurama Secondary School:  Located in Meru District also, the school is the recipient of a library (including book cases) provided by AFK.  The medical team worked with area medical professionals to provide the local community with a clinic.  We will continue to provide books, educational and library workshops and visiting medical teams.

Silverbeck School:  Located in Kikuyu, the school was the site of a very large medical camp this year and the recipient of books, and school supplies as well as providing workshops for the library and educational participants.

Ongoing Programs:

Orphan Support Program:  In partnership with the VCK- Voluntary Counselors Kenya, we support the VCK's goals to help orphans, widows and those affected by HIV/AIDS, directly or indirectly.  Through the Orphan Support Program we offer individuals intrested in helping an orphaned child the opportunity to sponsor them by committing to a monthly donation that will go toward that child's nutrition, education, clothing and sometimes needed medications and shelter.  The program also offers other ways to help.  Read more about the Orphan Sponsorship program.

Kibera School for Girls and Women's Clinic Operational Funds:
AFK provides operational funds to both the Kibera School for Girls and the Women's Clinic set up by our partners, Shinning Hope for Community (SHOFCO).  Funds are used to pay the teachers' salaries, provide Internet services, shipment of uniforms and school supplies.  AFK is also providing a Solar Water Purifier to the school this coming summer. This summer 2010 we will be setting up a women's free clinic in the school compound.  Funds will be used to re-plenish clinic supplies and assist with the payment of a stipend for the clinic nurse.

VCK Goat Donation Program- Through VCK we have been providing some desperately poor families with goats.
Goats provide milk, can be bred and can often raise a family out of abject poverty.  For only $125 per goat, Jane Kahuthia of VCK purchases a goat for a family in desperate need and as is custom in Kenya, they give the goat the name of the donor.
Please donate $125 for a goat, and indicate in the comments box "VCK Goat Project- NAME"(indicating name for the goat). If you have any questions, please contact us.

   Mission Trips:
We do periodic work/pleasure trips during which volunteers work and see the fruits of their efforts and get to know beautiful Kenya and its
wildlife. The Teams provide professional development activities as requested by our Kenyan partners in hospitals, schools or libraries.

Financial and Other Assistance:

We provide financial and other forms of assistance to schools, hospitals, youth and women's programs and public health programs.

It is important to mention that 100% of our funds go directly to our programs and to Kenya. AFK is a 100% volunteer staffed organization and no funds are used for professional fundraising.
